Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer (Harness)

Department: Operations

Location: Chatsworth

Reports to: Director of Production

FLSA: Exempt

SCOPE:  The Harness Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for the assembly and manufacturing of wire harnesses. This includes working with engineering teams to execute a rigorous process that will ensure smooth and high-quality harness builds. You will work directly with manufacturing and an internal production team to build harnesses to the highest possible quality standard, including ownership of all processes and tooling used on the factory floor.

  • Perform a hands-on engineering and liaison role between production and engineering to manufacture harnesses.
  • Must know how to apply Engineering knowledge and related codes and standards in analyzing and developing effective assembly systems, generating specifications, and delivering technical assistance to manufacturing.
  • Become the first responder for production related non-conformances, drive to root cause and disposition according to manufacturing policies.
  • Update designs and processes, when necessary, in response to manufacturing issues, parts obsolescence, and system requirement changes
  • Participate in harness reviews acting as an expert in processes for manufacturability, yield improvements, supplier capabilities assessments, quality control, etc.
  • Monitor drawing templates to maintain standards.
  • Prepare product and process reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Prepare engineering documentation necessary for the transition from development to production including schematic diagrams, bills of materials, suitable alternate parts lists, mechanical drawings, assembly procedures, and test procedures.
  • Drive lean projects to improve the manufacturing process to eliminate waste, reduce cost and improve yield.
  • Works with cable harness factories in production phases
  • Work closely with materials group to ensure that all raw materials are procured in a timely manner to support the schedule requirements of the contract.
  • Define department’s engineering activity layout and design of workflow and tooling requirements.
  • Work with other department managers to coordinate schedule and resource needs between departments.
  • Conduct periodic internal status meetings for all contracts and updates the customer to any problems that cause a schedule impact along with a recovery plan to correct the problem.
  • Provide technical advice to manufacturing regarding tooling and fixture design.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, aerospace or manufacturing engineering
  • Experience modeling with 3D CAD software (for example – NX/Unigraphics, Catia, Solidworks)
  • 3 years of professional experience in a manufacturing environment working within a recognized quality system (e.g., AS9100, ISO9001)

PREFERRED SKIILS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years of experience in a similar role that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Experience with automotive, aerospace or marine harnessing
  • Demonstrated professional experience providing engineering and manufacturing support for the production of highly complex electronic products.
  • Experience transitioning products from design to manufacturing as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Experience interpreting and creating component and assembly drawings.
  • Experience designing tooling in a manufacturing environment.
  • Six Sigma Belt
  • Capable of solving complex manufacturing problems with little to no supervision on schedule as an individual or as a member of an integrated team
  • Knowledge of ERP systems, work order creation/management and BOM structures
  • Understanding IPC/WHMA-A-620 is a plus (training can be provided)
  • Skilled using Visio, other cable design applications are a plus.  
  • Attention to detail, quality, and the ability to make decisions that enforce company policies and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management including customers.  
  • Must be able to speak/read/write English.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 lb.

  • Position may require extended work hours and weekend work.
